Saturday Salad at Squeaky’s Rite Spot

I was pretty sure today’s lunch was going to be awful after witnessing a squash going in to the oven. But as I often am, I was surprised with the outcome. The roasted cubes of organic butternut squash were served on a salad with little organic tomatoes, feta, cilantro and drizzled with a little bit of olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Yum yum yum!!!

OK, the salad course is done. What’s next? Huh? You’re kidding. That’s lunch??

Well, this bear is still hungry! But I did like the salad.

Redwood Grill

The bacon mushroom penne with chopped green onion was presented without bread. Waitress asked if I want cheese and pepper. The initial flavour was something like it was cooked near or with seafood. Mushrooms were nice and juicy, bacon was fried to perfection. No herbs at all which would have made it better. No dark beers were offered only Keith’s red and it was served with lots of foam in a cold glass. Not a fancy restaurant by any means and it is attached to the FutureInns.

Curry Day at Squeaky’s Rite Spot

I sort of look forward to Monday lunch at the Rite-Spot, as it is usually a big curry special. I say “sort of” because a lot of the time “Curry Monday” is an excuse to get rid of all the weird vegetables in the fridge, and today was no exception. After starving until 2pm (as usual) I was served an enormous place of Celeriac and Romanesco Broccoli Curry. What the heck? If you aren’t familiar with Romanesco, it is this strange broccoflower type stuff that looks like cool fractals. But in a curry? Well, for one the green colour looked strange in the sauce. I sighed a heavy sigh and sat down to eat. The fractals were pretty and it was garnished with cilantro and toasted almonds. Not bad, not bad at all. I thought it could be saucier and spicier, and maybe contain less vegetables and more butter and chicken….please can we have butter chicken next week??? PLEASE????

At least it was served with organic lemonade and perrier instead of the boring tap water I usually get.

Coffee Break at Squeaky’s rite-spot

Afternoon coffee at Squeaky’s is really hit or miss, and never fantastic. Today I was served an ABEARicano made with espresso that had been sitting on the stove since this morning. Yuck. At least I could sweeten it up with some really good organic cream and a delicious curly wurly from my secret stash! I just love curly wurlies!! You ancient humans might remember them as “wig wags” back from the black and white days. They don’t sell those in Canada anymore but they are the same thing as Cadbury Curly Wurlies! Although I seem to remember them being bigger back in the black and white days…..

Chilli at Squeaky’s rite-spot Diner

Finally!

I just love Squeaky’s rite spot. However, my main complaint with the place is the service is INCREDIBLY slow! I have been waiting for my lunch for HOURS!!! Here is it, 2pm, and I was finally served. But boy, it was worth the wait today (sometimes it isn’t). I got black bean quinoa chilli served with Banditos organic multigrain chips (my favourite!) and a glass of water (the bar here is not very good). I am always a bit scared when lunch is vegetarian, but I am an omnivore after all. The quinoa and black beans were simmered with carrots, zucchini, leeks, and red peppers and was just perfectly spiced with chilli, oregano, cumin, and cinnamon. And everything (well, except the spices) was organic! Yum!

This place would definitely get 5 stars outta me if the service wasn’t so horrible. And also it is often filled with screaming children who refuse to eat their dinners.
